Initially, I explored a more vibrant direction, incorporating Laju’s logo colours into a soft rainbow palette.
However, after discussions with the CEO and shareholders, we aligned on a cleaner, more minimal aesthetic.

My Role: Product Designer

Timeline: April 2023 - June 2023
Laju Butterflies set out to create a collection of beauty products that embody affordable luxury - offering customers a premium experience without the premium price tag.
Working closely with the CEO, I designed a cohesive line of packaging that reflects this balance of quality and accessibility, blending elegance with approachability to create a brand presence that feels both indulgent and attainable.
Design Process

To inform the design direction, I conducted user research focused on understanding how customers perceive “affordable luxury” within the beauty market, exploring preferences around packaging aesthetics, material choices, and perceived value.
Through a mix of competitor analysis and informal interviews with target users, I identified that customers equate luxury with minimal, refined design and tactile quality, but are put off by excessiveness and wasteful materials.
However, after discussions with the CEO and shareholders, we aligned on a cleaner, more minimal aesthetic.
The more refined white background design ultimately conveyed a stronger sense of luxury and allowed the product details and logo to stand out with greater clarity and sophistication.
This modern layout pairs soft color accents with elegant typography and metallic detailing to create a cohesive, high-end look that feels approachable and aspirational.
The redesigned packaging led to a 43% increase in product sales over the past year, clearly demonstrating how effectively the refreshed visual identity resonated with customers. Both the CEO and shareholders praised the outcome as a perfect embodiment of the brand’s affordable luxury ethos.
Looking back, I recognise that as my first professional product design project, I was still finding my footing — eager to prove myself and therefore more inclined to defer to senior opinions. With the experience I’ve since gained, I now understand the value of trusting my creative instincts and the importance of advocating for my ideas with confidence.
This project became a pivotal learning moment, shaping how I navigate collaboration, self-belief, and creative decision-making in each role that followed.
The design process began with rough sketches exploring form, color placement, and hierarchy.
These early concepts helped define the visual balance between luxury and accessibility before moving into high-fidelity mockups.
Initially, I explored a more vibrant direction, incorporating Laju’s logo colours into a soft rainbow palette.
To bring the concepts to life, I created quick physical prototypes using paper and tape. Seeing the packaging in 3D helped refine spacing, logo placement, and overall visual balance before moving into final print production.
